Bell island in the Matsushima bay
Bell Island is one of the many natually formed islands with a unique landscape.

Matsushima Bay, located in the Miyagi Prefecture in Japan, is famous for a group of small islands known for their stunning natural beauty. The name Matsushima means “pine-tree islands,” and it lives up to its name with its stunning views of pine trees draped over the rocky shorelines.

The bay consists of approximately 260 small islands, and this natural wonder is considered on the the “Three Views in Japan“, along with Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture, and Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture.

The islands of Matsushima Bay vary in size and shape, each covered with dense pine trees that contribute to its iconic scenery. Many of the islands have poetic names inspired by their unique forms, such as “Kanejima” (Bell Island) and “Futagojima” (Twin Islands).

One of the most popular activities in Matsushima is to take a boat tour around the islands. This is the best way to get a full appreciation of the breathtaking views, including the iconic pine trees, serene waters, and rock formations. There are a number of tours and sightseeing options for exploring the Matsushima Bay. The Matsushima Bay and nearby town of Matsushima are a must see for anyone exploring the Tohoku region of Japan.

Matsushima Bay is known for its fresh seafood, and there are many restaurants and food stalls where you can enjoy delicious dishes such as oysters, scallops, and other shellfish. For a unique experience, try the local specialty of “Matsushima-style” oysters, which are served on a bed of rice in a small wooden box.

Matsushima Bay was near the epicenter of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Remarkably, the bay’s many islands acted as a natural breakwater, minimizing damage to the town of Matsushima.
