Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Okinawa Prefecture

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is often referred to as Japan’s best Aquarium. It is one of the largest aquariums in the world, with the main attraction, Kurushio Tank, boasting a wide variety of ocean life. The Kurushio Tank, named after the Kurushio ocean current, holds 7,500 cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water.

The Kuroshio Sea tank is home to a wide variety of marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays, and other large fish species. Visitors can watch these creatures swim around the tank from a 22-meter (72-foot) long acrylic tunnel, providing a breathtaking view of the animals from all angles.

The Ocean Blue Café sits looking into the Kuroshio Tank, and is perfect for sitting back with a coffee and a small sweet treat, while enjoying the sea creatures swim majestically before you.

In addition to the Kuroshio, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium features other exhibits showcasing a diverse array of marine life found in the waters surrounding Okinawa.

Visitors can explore exhibits dedicated to coral reefs, sea turtles, and even a touch tank where they can interact with approximately 20 species of small marine creatures like starfish and sea cucumbers.

Outside of the main aquarium building the fun never stops. Outside, you can find the Okichan Theatre which showcases exciting dolphin shows, Dolphin Lagoon, the Sea Turtle pool, and the Manatee pool, as well as the Kids Adventure Land, the Esplanade.

Nearby, you can also find the Emerald Beach – a safe and popular swimming beach, as well as the Oceanic Culture Museum.

While the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is a long trip from the prefectural capital city of Naha, the venture out to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is well worth it, especially if you plan on seeing the many sites, beaches, and attractions in the nearby area. It is a well worth day trip, and one that will surely keep the children entertained if you are travelling with them.
