Inuyama Castle

Inuyama Castle, located in Inuyama City, in northern Aichi Prefecture, is a Japanese castle that has stood the test of time, being one of the twelve castles remaining with its original buildings from the Japanese feudal era. The castle was initially constructed in 1537, and has since survived war, natural disasters and the Meiji restoration. While the castle is relatively small, it is arguably one of the most beautiful castles in Japan.

The castle stands imposingly atop a small hill along the Kiso River, the boundary between Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture. The positioning of the castle provided the occupants with unhindered view of the surrounding area, and benefited from the wide, fast flowing river below which served as a natural moat.

Inuyama Castle is a three-story wooden structure with an additional small turret on the top. It features a unique architectural style known as “kirizuma-zukuri,” characterized by a gabled roof with an undulating shape resembling the wings of a bird. The castle’s exterior is adorned with intricate wooden carvings and ornamental metalwork, showcasing the craftsmanship of the period.  

Inside the castle, visitors can explore various rooms and corridors that have been preserved in their original state. The interior exhibits historical artifacts, weapons, and armour, providing insights into the castle’s past and the samurai culture of feudal Japan.

One of the highlights of Inuyama Castle is its observation deck, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Kiso River and the picturesque town of Inuyama. The castle is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season when the nearby grove of cherry trees creates a stunning backdrop.
