Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

Yokohama's Iconic Shopping Complex

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, also known as the Yokohama Akarenga Soko in Japanese, is a historic and iconic building in Yokohama, Japan. It is located in the city’s waterfront district, known as Minato Mirai 21, and has become a symbol of the city. The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse was originally constructed in 1911 and served as a customs and bonded warehouse for Yokohama’s port facilities. The building played a vital role in the handling of cargo, including raw silk and other goods, during Japan’s early industrialization.

In the 1980s, the warehouse was no longer used for its original purpose due to changes in cargo handling methods. As a result, it underwent a significant renovation and was reopened to the public as a cultural and shopping complex in 2002.Visitors to the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse can enjoy shopping for unique souvenirs, crafts, and fashion items in its boutique shops. There are also several restaurants and cafes serving a wide range of cuisines, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with a view.

The warehouse is known for its seasonal decorations and illuminations, especially during the Christmas season when it is adorned with festive lights and decorations.
