The lively Dotonbori Canal

One of the first things that visitors will notice upon arriving in Dotonbori is the iconic Glico Man sign. This landmark, which features a runner crossing the finish line, has been a fixture of the area for over 90 years and is a popular spot for taking photos.

This iconic landmark is totally free to explore, but be warned, there are plenty of shops, and food stalls in the immediate surroundings of  Dotonbori that may be tempting. 

Explore Osaka Castle Park

Osaka Castle Park is a large public park located in Chūō-ku, Osaka, Japan. It surrounds Osaka Castle, a historically significant and iconic Japanese castle that played a major role in the unification of Japan during the 16th century. The park covers approximately 106.7 hectares and offers a blend of historical and recreational attractions.

Osaka Castle Park is a famous destination for cherry blossom viewing during the spring season. Thousands of cherry trees bloom, creating a stunning and vibrant display. Many people visit the park to enjoy hanami picnics under the cherry blossoms. 

And while there is an entry fee to go inside of Osaka Castle, you can enjoy the beautiful Osaka Castle Park for free. 

Abeno Harukas Rooftop Plaza

The Abeno Harukas is Osaka’s tallest building. And while there is a paid observation deck known as the Abeno Harukas 300, from the 58th to the 60th floor, on the 10th floor where you purchase tickets for the Abeno Harukas 300, there is a small outdoor viewing platform called the Rooftop Plaza.

The Rooftop Plaza is free observation deck which provides a good view of the Osaka skyline. You may not be towering over buildings from the rooftop plaza as you would from Abeno Harukas 300, the rooftop plaza is still a worthwhile observation deck for those not looking to pay the entry fee to the Abeno Harukas 300. 

Explore Sumiyoshi Taisha

Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of Japan’s oldest and most important Shinto shrines. It’s located in the Sumiyoshi ward of Osaka, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to the kami (spirits or deities) who protect travelers and sailors, making it a significant place of worship for those seeking safety and good fortune during their journeys.

Sumiyoshi Taisha’s history dates back more than 1,800 years. It has been a place of worship for centuries and is considered one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The shrine has been rebuilt and renovated multiple times over its long history.

The shrines grounds are completely free to visit, allowing you to explore some of Osaka’s history and one of the most significant shrines without breaking the bank.

Wander through the Osaka Mint Museum

The Osaka Mint Museum, located in Osaka, Japan, showcases the history of coinage and the minting process in the country. While the museum itself is free, entry is limited to specific times during the year, typically during the cherry blossom season in mid to late April. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the evolution of Japanese currency, rare coins, and the intricacies of minting. The highlight is the mint’s stunning cherry tree-lined garden, which is only open to the public during the spring opening. This seasonal spectacle attracts crowds seeking to witness the breathtaking cherry blossoms.

The beautiful Minoo Falls & Minoo Park

Minoh Falls is one of the many free things to do in Osaka

Minoo Falls, located in the mountains of Northern Osaka Prefecture, is a scenic waterfall found in Minoo Park and a nature reserve. It is almost the opposite what you would imagine Osaka to be like, but it really is a stunning place to visit. 

While the hike to the waterfalls does take about 30-45 minutes for the average walker, the trail is very well maintained and almost anyone can hike it. Minoo Falls is located in a wildlife preservation area, where many Macaque monkeys were released several decades ago in hopes to reintroduce them to the Osaka forest. 

It is free to visit Minoo Falls, and escape from the hustle and bustle of Osaka to enjoy the beautiful nature Osaka has to offer.
