Bifuka Sturgeon Museum

The Bifuka Sturgeon Musueum, Hokkaido Prefecture

The Bifuka Sturgeon Museum is a small museum/aquarium located just a  few minutes away from the Bifuka roadside rest stop on National Route 40.

The facility was opened in 1997, and the unassuming-looking building and museum is home to several species of Sturgeon, all varying in age from a handful of weeks to full-sized adult sturgeon. The museum is an educational facility and breeding ground for Sturgeon, raising awareness.

Sturgeon used to be found in the Teshio River, which passes only a few hundred meters to the east of the museum, until the Meiji Period (mid-late 1800s/Early 1900s), when their numbers dwindled. Today, Sturgeon are believed to have been wiped out from the Teshio River. The museum was first introduced as a way to bring back sturgeon to the area and showcase the creatures that once thrived in the Teshio River.

The museum is free to enter, but there is fish food available for 100 JPY, this fee helps to contribute to the running and day to day business of the museum. It only takes about 5 minutes to walk through the museum, and is well worth the stop for anyone travelling by.
