Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan’s most famous and historic hot spring resorts, located in Gunma Prefecture. Renowned for its high-quality, mineral-rich waters, Kusatsu has been attracting visitors for centuries with its therapeutic benefits and scenic mountain setting.
At the heart of Kusatsu is the Yubatake, one of the most iconic features of the town. This large wooden structure channels hot spring water from the source, cooling it as it cascades over rocks into the town’s public baths and ryokan (traditional inns).
The sulfuric waters of Kusatsu Onsen are considered some of the best in Japan, boasting natural healing properties for various ailments, including skin conditions, muscle pain, and fatigue. The water’s high acidity helps to cleanse and rejuvenate the body, and the springs have long been praised for their curative qualities.
Kusatsu Onsen has preserved its traditional bathing practices. The most famous is Jikan-yu, a bathing method where people bathe in extremely hot water (around 48°C or higher) for short periods to promote health. Another notable custom is the yumomi (water-stirring) performance, where staff stir the hot spring water with wooden paddles to cool it down in a rhythmic and lively manner, often accompanied by songs.
Kusatsu Onsen offers a nostalgic atmosphere, with quaint streets, traditional ryokan, and many foot baths (ashiyu) scattered throughout the town where visitors can relax for free.
