Senkoji Park

View of Onomichi from Senkoji Park

Senkoji Park (千光寺公園) is a popular scenic spot in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, known for its panoramic views, beautiful cherry blossoms, and the historic Senkoji Temple. While popular among locals, Senkoji Park is an underrated attraction among international tourists. However, the scenic views of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan make this a must-visit destination.

The park is named after the Senkoji Temple, which dates back to the 9th century. It sits atop Mount Senkoji and is famous thanks to the panoramic views attained from the temple and surrounding area. The temple’s main hall, known as the Hondo, is notable for its bold red colour, which stands out against the surrounding mountainside.

One of the unique aspects of Senkoji Temple is the presence of maneki-neko (beckoning cat) statues, which are scattered around the temple grounds. The maneki-neko is a symbol of good fortune and is commonly found in businesses across Japan. In Onomichi, the cats have a special connection, as the nearby Cat Alley (Neko no Hosomichi) is famous for its feline inhabitants.

Most visitors often take the Senkoji Ropeway to reach the park and temple. The short cable car ride up Mount Senkoji is an experience in itself, providing aerial views of Onomichi’s narrow, winding streets and the sea below. Alternatively, there are several free walking paths up the side of Mount Senkoji, which will take about 15-25 minutes (depending on level of fitness) to scale from the base. The walking paths can be steep and stairs are plentiful.

Senkoji Park is one of the best places in the region for cherry blossom viewing (hanami). In spring, the park’s pathways are lined with over 1,500 cherry trees, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists to enjoy the fleeting beauty of sakura. The park is especially lively during the cherry blossom season, with many people gathering for picnics under the trees.
