Matsuyama Castle

Matsuyama Castle Keep in Ehime

Matsuyama Castle, also known as Eihei-jō, is a stunning piece of Japanese history and culture located in the city of Matsuyama, on the island of Shikoku. The castle, which dates back to 1603, is one of only 12 original castles remaining in Japan, and it offers visitors a glimpse into the country’s rich history and culture.

The original five-storied castle keep constructed from 1602-1628 was struck by lightning and burned down in 1820. The keep was replaced by the 3 story keep that is seen today at Matsuyama Castle.

Once at the castle, visitors can explore the castle’s many buildings, including the main keep, which houses a museum displaying artifacts from the castle’s history. The main keep is a great place to learn about the castle’s history and see some of the original artifacts that were used in its construction. There is also an observation deck that provides visitors with a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding area.

The castle grounds also feature beautiful gardens, including the Ninomaru Garden, which is a traditional Japanese garden with a pond, a waterfall, and a tea house. Visitors can also take a stroll around the castle’s moat, which offers a tranquil and peaceful setting. During spring, locals flock to Matsuyama castle to view the cherry blossoms on the approximately 200 cherry trees in the castle grounds.

However, for those who are feeling more adventurous, the hike up the mountain is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the area and get some exercise at the same time.
