The Shibuya Crossing, or the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, is a pedestrian crossing located outside of Shibuya Station known the sheer number of people who cross it at any given time. It is estimated that up to 2,500 people cross the intersection at simultaneously during peak hours (Peak hours are usually around about 5:00-7:00pm).
The Shibuya Crossing has a unique, electric atmosphere, with crowds of people moving in all directions and the surrounding buildings and billboards lighting up the area, comparable to Time Square in New York. Due to the sheer volume of people at the crossing at all times of the day, companies will pay enormous amounts of money to advertise on one of the many billboards lining the crossing.
While Tokyo certainly has a lot of memorable and iconic tourist attractions, the Shibuya Crossing stands out among them all.
But beyond the crossing itself, Shibuya is a district with plenty to offer visitors. The nearby Shibuya 109 shopping center is a must-visit for fashion enthusiasts, with its numerous floors of trendy clothing and accessories. For those interested in Japanese pop culture, the area is home to several record stores, manga shops, and anime-themed cafes.
But perhaps the most famous attraction in Shibuya is the Hachiko statue. Located just outside Shibuya Station, this bronze statue commemorates a loyal dog who used to wait for his owner at the station every day, even after the owner passed away. Today, the statue has become a symbol of loyalty and devotion, and it’s a popular spot for photos and selfies.
