Himeji Castle – Hyogo

Himeji Castle is one of Japan’s most iconic and best-preserved feudal castles. It was originally built in the 14th century as a fortification, and was gradually expanded and rebuilt over the following centuries. The castle reached its current form in the 17th century, under the patronage of Ikeda Terumasa, a powerful feudal lord.

During this period, the castle served as a symbol of the Ikeda clan’s wealth and power, and as a base of operations for military campaigns. The castle’s strategic location made it a key stronghold during various conflicts throughout Japan’s history.

One of the most striking features of Himeji Castle is its stunning architecture. The castle is built on a hill and is surrounded by an extensive network of moats, walls, and gates, which were designed to protect it from attackers. The castle’s main keep, or tenshu, is a towering structure that rises seven stories high and is topped by a distinctive roof with curved, upturned edges.

The castle’s interior is just as impressive as its exterior. Visitors can explore the various rooms and chambers, which feature ornate woodwork, painted screens, and other decorative elements. One of the most interesting features is the castle’s complex system of defensive measures, which include hidden trapdoors, secret passages, and other clever mechanisms designed to thwart would-be intruders.

Visiting Himeji Castle is a must-do activity for anyone interested in Japanese history, architecture, or culture. The castle is easily accessible by train from Osaka or Kyoto, and admission is very affordable.

Visitors can choose to explore the castle on their own, or take a guided tour to learn more about its history and significance. There are also audio guides available in several languages.

It’s worth noting that the castle can be quite busy, especially during peak tourist season, so it’s a good idea to arrive early in the day to avoid the crowds.

The castle is open year-round, but the best time to visit is probably in the spring or fall, when the weather is mild and the surrounding gardens are in bloom.
