The Hiroshima Orizuru Tower is a prominent and contemporary landmark located next to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan. Opened in 2016, the tower is situated near the Atomic Bomb Dome, the tower provides breathtaking panoramic views of Hiroshima city, including the Peace Memorial Park, the Ota River, and the cityscape.
The top floor of the Hiroshima Orizuru Tower is known as the Hiroshima Hills, and is an open-air observation deck. The Hiroshima Hills deck provides a unique perspective of the Atomic Bomb dome, located about a hundred meters away from the tower. It is also one off the only public observation decks in Hiroshima city, providing a perspective of the city unlike anywhere else.
One notable feature of the tower is the “Orizuru Wall”, the paper crane wall, which can be seen from the roadside. The Orizuru wall is a transparent glass section of the tower – visible from the roadside – in which visitors fold paper cranes and drop them into the wall. Paper Cranes are a symbol of peace inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki – a young girl who survived the initial atomic bombing of Hiroshima but later developed leukemia from radiation exposure. While hospitalized, Sadako began folding paper cranes, inspired by the Japanese legend that folding 1,000 cranes grants a wish.
On-site, you can also find a slide for a fun and quick way to get between floors, as well as a cafe, souvenir shop, and various displays.
The Hiroshima Orizuru Tower costs 2200JPY for adults, and there is an additional fee of 100JPY for the Orizuru Wall paper crane folding.
