Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine is a small yet scenic shrine near Aso-Kuju National Park, Kumamoto Prefecture. This quiet, remote and atmospheric shrine is distinguished by some hundred moss-covered stone lanterns that line the path from the shrine entrance to the shrine buildings.
Behind the Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine main hall, a small pathway takes up to a sacred stone known as Ugetoiwa. According to the local legend, a demon erupted from the rock, bursting open a 10 meter-wide and long hole in the side of the mountain, resulting in a stunning natural arch. Underneath the rock formation, there again is a small shrine which worshipers sometimes make offerings to.
This beautiful shrine begins at a rather unassuming entrance just off the main road. A short and surprisingly steep climb with plenty of steps awaits those keen on exploring the shrine.
In Pop Culture, the Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, notably the stone lantern-lined pathway, was featured in the 2002 manga and later 2011 anime film “Hotarubi no Mori e“, or “Into The Forest of Fireflies“. Due to the shrines scenic and picturesque atmosphere, the shrine is also gaining popularity on social media, resulting in photographers and tourists from around the world visiting and enjoying this beautiful and remote destination in Japan.
