Katsura River in Kyoto during the autumn

Another attraction of the Katsura River is the Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋). Spanning the Katsura River, the bridge offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, especially during the spring cherry blossom season and the vibrant autumn foliage. The name “Togetsukyo” means “Moon-Crossing Bridge,” a poetic name given by Emperor Kameyama in the late 12th century after he observed the moon seemingly crossing the bridge. The current structure was built in 1934 but retains the charm of traditional Japanese architecture. The original bridge dates back over 1,000 years to the Heian period.
