Minoh Falls

Minoo Falls
Minoh Falls in the winter.

Minoh Falls, located in the mountains of Northern Osaka Prefecture, is a scenic waterfall found in Minoh Park and a is nature reserve. It is almost the opposite what you would imagine Osaka to be like, but it really is a stunning place to visit. While the hike to the waterfalls does take about 30-45 minutes for the average walker, the trail is very well maintained and almost anyone can hike it.

This stunning waterfall cascades down 33 meters (about 108 feet) and is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers

Minoh Falls is located in a wildlife preservation area, where many Macaque monkeys were released several decades ago in hopes to reintroduce them to the Osaka forest. Nowadays, the forest is thriving with monkeys and other wildlife, including birds, and freshwater river crabs.

At Minoh Falls, you can find a couple of small food shops serving up local treats. One noteworthy treat in this area is Momiji tempura, or fried Maple leaves. You will see many vendors selling this local specialty along the trail leading up to the falls, and at the falls.

Please be mindful of your surroundings if you grab a bite to eat around the falls, as monkeys often frequent the waterfalls and may be aggressive towards you if you are eating and may snatch your food or attack you for it. It’s the best place in Osaka to see monkeys in their natural habitat. The monkeys are not to be fed, punishable by hefty fines, as part of the reintroduction to the wild, the city of Minoh is trying to ensure that the monkeys are solely relying on themselves rather than handouts. This law was enacted April 1, 2010 and is strictly enforced.

Minoh park, and Minoh Falls is among the greatest spots in Osaka Prefecture to gaze upon the autumn colours. But even outside of autumn, Minoh Falls is a great escape from the busy concrete jungle of Osaka. The falls are particularly beautiful after a fresh rainfall, which increase the flowrate significantly.

Along the way to the falls, you will pass by the Minoh Park Insectarium. This small museum showcases the amazing variety of insects and creatures living in Japan, with both live and persevered displays.
