Mt. Fuji Climbing fees are set to rise for the 2025 climbing season (July–September), along with stricter regulations to manage the increasing number of visitors.
Ahead of the 2024 climbing season, a mandatory ¥2,000 “tourist tax” was introduced for climbers as a climbing permit to help address issues such as overcrowding, littering, and unprepared hikers. However, starting in 2025, the fee for a Mt. Fuji climbing permit will increase to ¥4,000 per person. Climbers must also book online ahead of time, as the the number of climbers per day is capped at 4000.
Before the introduction of the climbing permit system, a ¥1,000 donation was optional, but the new rules enforce stricter regulations to promote responsible hiking.
As part of the permit process, climbers must complete a short training session and pass a test to ensure they understand the risks and necessary precautions. Climbing Mt. Fuji is a lot more difficult than most people think. At a height of 3,776 meters, Mt. Fuji is an active volcano, and the loose volcanic gravel and difficult terrain make Climbing Mt. Fuji challenging.
The mountain will also be closed to those without a hut booking, from 2:00pm to 3:00am everyday. Aside from the permit fee, climbers will also need to ensure that hut bookings are made in advance. Credit cards are often not accepted for hut reservations, so be prepared with plenty of cash. There is also a ¥200 fee for using the toilet on Mt. Fuji.
