One of the best views of the Nara skyline can be seen from Mt.Wakakusa. Mt.Wakakusa is a grass covered mountain a mountain on the eastern side of the city, which has a height of about 350m. This provides a stunning vantage point overlooking the entire city of Nara and other surrounding cities.
On the 4th Saturday of every January, the mountainside is set ablaze as part of the Wakausa Yamayaki festival. Fire ravages large portions of the mountainside as part of a tradition dating back several hundred years. Before setting the mountain on fire, there is a short fireworks ceremony to mark the occasion.
For a small fee, you can climb out Mt.Wakakusa on one of the dedicated walking trails, with about an hour’s hike from the base to the summit observation area. The walking trail is closed during winter. During the winter period, the only way to get to the top of Mt.Wakakusa is via car on a toll road.
