Three-storied Pagoda of Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple

Naritasan Shinsho-ji, sometimes also called Naritasan temple, is a Buddhist temple found in the city of Narita. Given the close proximity to Narita International Airport, it is one of the most famous attractions in the city of Narita, as many people will visit this famous temple as the arrive or depart the country.  

The temple was first founded around the year 940, as has since been a key worship area among locals due to the historical and religious significance of the temple. It is said that in the first few days of January each year, over a million people make their visit to the temple for the first temple visit of the new year. 

One of the main attractions of Naritasan Shinsho-ji is the Great Pagoda of Peace. The temple is also home to a three-story pagoda, which is one of the oldest wooden structures in Japan. 

Some other attractions of the temple are the Prince Shotoku Hall, the Shakado Hall, and the Naritasan Park. All up, one could easily spend hours exploring the history of the temple, as well as taking a pleasant stroll through the park.

Another popular attraction at Naritasan Shinsho-ji is the Naritasan Omotesando, a street lined with traditional shops and restaurants. Visitors can sample local specialties such as unagi (eel) and sakura mochi (cherry blossom-flavored rice cake), or purchase souvenirs such as traditional crafts and sweets.

Naritasan Ometesando is certainly one of the main attractions of the area, and is a great place to stock up on snacks and sourviers before your flight out of Narita. 

If you are in the area, and have some time to spare, the Naritasan Shinsho-ji is definitely worth a visit.

Accessing Naritasan Shinsho-ji

Naritasan Temple is a short 15-20 minute walk from JR Narita Station, as well as Keisei-Narita Station. 

The walk is simple, and easy through the shopping streets of Narita. Given all the shops along the way, it may take longer than the 15 minutes to get there, as the shops can be quite enticing. 

JR Narita Station, and Keisei-Narita Station are only less than 10 minutes on the train from Narita International Airport, allowing for you to explore the temple easily in between flights should you have time.
