Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse

One of the visually striking Nebuta floats at the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse in Aomori Prefecture, one of the premier things to see and do in Aomori Prefecture.

The Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse in Aomori City celebrates the Nebuta Festival, one of Northern Japan’s most iconic events. Held annually from August 2–7, the festival features massive, illuminated floats called “nebuta,” which parade through the streets in a spectacular display.

These floats, up to 9 meters wide, 7 meters deep, and 5 meters tall, are crafted with intricate wood and wire frames covered in painted paper. Backlighting brings them to life, showcasing dramatic scenes from Japanese folklore. Most floats take over a dozen people to loft and parade through the festival streets.

The Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse first opened in 2011, and showcases the history and cultural significance of the Nebuta Festival to the people of Aomori. The museum celebrates the craftmanship behind each of the intricate Nebuta displays. The museum proudly displays festival footage and performances, as well as the design and construction process of the Nebuta Floats, and also floats from previous festivals, allowing visitors to get a taste of the Nebuta Festival year-round.

The floats at the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse are regularly rotated out each year, featuring the the best designs from the previous festival, providing new and exciting visual displays each year. The museum typically displays four to five full-sized nebuta floats at a time, and some smaller floats dotted around the museum grounds.

If you enjoyed the Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse, then you may also like the Tachineputa Museum in Goshogawara city. The Tachineputa Museum is home to one of the largest Nebuta floats, standing at 23 meters tall.
