Nesugatayama Ropeway
Netsugatayama ropeway

Nesugatayama, also known as Mt. Nesugata, is a small mountain located in the small and sleepy town of Shimoda in Shizouka Prefecture, only housing 23,000 people. The city itself is actually the real world city that pallet town was based off for the Pokemon video game series.

Nesugatayama offers amazing views of the coast and the surrounding town, and is a great place to photograph this historic region. Here, you could enjoy a pleasant walk through the gardens at the summit with a view to remember.

For easy access, the mountain has a gondola service known as the Shimoda Ropeway, which can take you up to the obersvation deck on the mountain, which will provide you will give you the panoramic view we know you want to admire. While the ascent up Nesugatayama is quite short, the views are quite worth it, especially when you get a little bit of that harbour breeze which gently rocks the cabin – it’s really amusing to see everyone freak-out.

Just know that the summit can be quite windy, as the coastal breezes can be quite strong from time to time.
