Located in the charming city of Ozu, in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, Ozu Castle is a hidden gem that is often overlooked by tourists. However, for those who make the journey to this picturesque corner of Japan, the castle offers a glimpse into the country’s rich history and culture.
Built in the late 16th century, Ozu Castle was the seat of the local lord during the Edo period. The castle, which is also known as “Ozu-jō,” has been beautifully preserved and offers visitors a chance to step back in time and imagine what life was like for the castle’s residents.
Due to both natural and man-made disasters, the original castle keep from the the 16th has been lost. The current castle began its restoration in the 1950s, and the main castle keep was the last to be finished in 2004.
The keep, which is five stories tall, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding city and countryside. Visitors can also see the various rooms and corridors that were used by the castle’s inhabitants, as well as the weapons and armor that were used for defense.
A feature of Ozu castle that is unique to most other castles in Japan is the ability to book an overnight stay at the castle. Guests can book a room in the castle to stay overnight and experience what life might have been like for the Samurai living in the castle back in the 16th century. Your stay will allow you to experience authenticity, and participate in the reservation of the history of this castle. As part of your stay, you will have the opportunity to wear samurai armor, participate in local ceremonies and festivals, dinner, and much more.
