Neighboring the Nagara River, Rokkaen is the former house of Moroto Seiroku, who was a wealthy businessman around the early 1900’s. Rokkaen is located in the city of Kuwana, of northern Mie Prefecture – bordering Aichi Prefecture. Seiroku’s mansion was designed by British Architect ‘Josiah Conder’, who designed the house with both western, and Japanese influence. Half of the house is the traditional Japanese style, while the other, was designed in the western design style of the 1900’s.
The western half of the house actually has 4 floors. Among the main buildings, there is a Japanese garden, a warehouse which all add up to slightly over 18,000m2, which is a pretty large premise, especially since Rokkaen is in an urban setting, and not out in the countryside as one would expect with a house of this size.
The surrounding Gardens make for a pleasant walk and are certainly relaxing. If you follow the river found just outside of the Rokkaen Garden premise, you will find Kyuka Park, which is another popular park in Kuwana City.
