The Sakurajima Ferry is both a vital transport link between Kagoshima and the Volcanic peninsula of Sakurajima, and a major tourist attraction. The ferry offers stunning views of Sakurajima volcano, Kagoshima City, and the surrounding bay, providing a unique perspective of the region.
Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanos in Japan, with small eruptions of ash happening nearly daily. Once an Island, Sakurajima was connected to the Japanese Island of Kyushu in the early 1900’s when the volcano erupted, sending layers and layers of lava into the ocean. Eventually, the lava connected the island’s eastern side to Kyushu, officially becoming a peninsula. Due to the volcanic nature of the peninsula and the varied scenery that has resulted from years of activity, Sakurajima is a popular tourist destination.
The Sakurajima ferry operates 24 hours a day, providing a quick and scenic route between these two destinations. During the day, services operate between Sakurajima and Kagoshima city every 10-15 minutes. While the frequency is lower during the nighttime, going down to hourly in each direction, watching the ferry cross the water in the dark of night is a spectacle in itself.
Passengers can enjoy panoramic views from the open-air observation deck. This is an excellent spot for photography, especially of the volcano.
All fares for the ferry are paid upon arrival at Sakurajima, and before you board the ferry back to Kagoshima. You can also use the CUTE Pass (1200JPY) for unlimited trips on the Sakurajima ferry, the Sakurajima Island View bus, Kagoshima streetcars, and the Kagoshima city view tour bus. Passes can be purchases at the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal, the Kagoshima Tourist Information Center, and Sakurajima Tourist Information Center.
