Toji Temple, located in Kyoto, Japan, is a Buddhist temple that is steeped in history and culture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is known for its stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and rich history.
One of the first things visitors will notice when they arrive at Toji Temple is the impressive five-story pagoda, which stands 55 meters tall. The pagoda is a unique architectural feature and is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan. The pagoda is open to view on special occasions. These dates are published on the Toji Temple website.
The temple grounds are also home to a variety of other buildings, including the main hall, which is known for its intricate carvings and beautiful artwork. The temple also has a number of gardens, including the rock garden, which is a perfect spot for contemplation and reflection.
Another highlight of visiting Toji Temple is the flea market that takes place on the 21st of every month. This market is a great place to find unique souvenirs and local goods, such as traditional Japanese ceramics, textiles, and crafts. This lively market operates from the early hours of the morning, and most vendors are packed up by 4:30pm. If you happen to be in Kyoto on the 21st of the month, then the Toji Temple markets are a must see. A smaller market also operates here on the first Sunday of the month, with most of the items being antiques.
