Wakkanai North breakwater Dome, Wakkanai Breakwater Dome

The Wakkanai North Breakwater Dome is an iconic sight in the small northern city of Japan, Wakkanai. This impressive concrete structure is 427m long and consists of 70 pillars, which form its unique Semi-arch shape. Construction began on the Wakkanai North Breakwater Dome from 1931 to 1936 and is listed as a Hokkaido Heritage Sight in 2001.

The Wakkanai North Breakwater Dome was a critical component of the port facilities when Wakkanai was a gateway for travel and trade to Karafuto (now Sakhalin Island, Russia) during the early 20th century. Because Wakkanai is exposed to the north by the Sea of Okhotsk, strong winds and sea ice used to belt the port, making it difficult to operate. The Breakwater Dome provided a safe barrier, allowing the port to operate far more easily and safer.

Today, the Breakwater Dome is an iconic sight in Wakkanai. Visitors to the breakwater dome will walk the length of the structure on the path below. It takes about 5 minutes end to end to walk.
